Version 1.1 Released!
April 23, 2007

Version 1.1 was released today. It contains a bunch of new features, as well as several bug fixes. Some of the coolest new features include the Variable Quick Look, as well as the improved support for significant figures and decimal limiting. Take a look at the screencast for an overview of what's new:

Here is a more complete list of features:

  • Added ability to limit the number of decimals.
  • Added "Variable Quick Look": Hold shift and move the mouse over a variable in the formula bar to see it's value.
  • Added ability to scroll up/down through previous formulas with shift+up/down arrows or control+p/n.
  • Added support for modulii: % = percent in regular mode, modulus in programmer mode.
  • Added cbrt(), ciel(), floor(), and round() functions.
  • Added a French localization.
  • Improved support for significant figure limiting.
  • Added some Emacs shortcuts.
  • Added clear shortcut to esc key.
  • Added support for exponential notation using capital E, such as 3E2.
  • Changed multiplication operator from an asterisk to a dot.
  • Improved the calculation engine -- it's faster and has some bug fixes.

As always, if you have any feedback or experience any problems, let me know.

Update (April 24): I uploaded a new file that fixes an interface related bug with the multiplication dot, where sometimes the cursor would not be in the right place after typing a multiplication dot. It's a minor problem with the way Dashboard handles unicode characters, but it's extremely annoying when it happens.

Although it's a minor problem, I need to develop a work-around and test it, so the re-uploaded version just disables the multiplication dot and uses the asterisk, like previous versions. If you had experienced that problem with the cursor, just re-download and install it, and everything should work fine.

Sorry about that, and the next version, 1.2, will go back to using the multiplication dot.

Down to the wire
April 16, 2007

It's been a while, so I thought I'd give a quick update.

I'm still working on version 1.1 of the widget. It's coming together nicely, and there are about 10-15 new features in addition to some bug fixes. I'm not sure when it will be released, though -- it's either going to be next Monday, or the second week of May. It's getting towards the end of the semester for me, and work is piling up, so unfortunately I don't have as much free time as I'd like. I'm working very hard to have it ready for next week, but a lot depends on how much time debugging some of the new features takes.

If you would like to help test out the new version before it's released, let me know using the contact form!
